Kirkenes Homevisit

Meet the locals - in their homes!

Northern Norwegians are hospitable people and now they invite our guests from around the world in for a cup of coffee and a chat. Through this visit you will have the chance to see what makes northern people tick and to discuss the Norwegian lifestyle with your host. You have a unique opportunity to ask questions and learn about the culture and everyday life in the north.

Welcome to Kirkenes

Kirkenes is an interesting place, both in terms of geography, culture and history. The Kirkenes district has only 10 000 people (the same amount as reindeer) in an area the size of a small country. Placed in a border triangle of Norway, Russia and Finland, our region is melting pot of these cultures, in addition to Sami influences.

Lots and lots of beautiful, arctic nature, long winters with Northern Lights and lots of snow and short, but fascinating summers illuminated by the midnight sun.

Snowhotel Kirkenes has become the cornerstone of the local tourism industry, with the eponymous igloo hotel made of natural snow and ice and numerous arctic activities. But we also want to contribute with cultural enrichment, to the benefit of both the local community and the guests from all over the world. Our idea with the Homevisit programme was: Yes, seeing the sights and hearing about the local culture on guided tours is nice, but – isn`t it even better meeting the locals in real life?

What does the home of a northerner look like? Why do they hang lamps in the windows? How do they survive the polar night? What do people work with and what do we do in our free time? All of these and more are questions you will get answered on the homevisit tour.

We want to get the travelers and the local people together.
